Don't Sweat the Small Stuff - The Versatility of the Sweater

By Stacy Montgomery

The plus size woman is certainly one of the most creative dressers (and shoppers) in the fashion world. Putting together a wardrobe of great accent pieces to compliment a fuller figure, as well as all the basics every woman needs, is definitely a challenge at times. Finding everything from bathing suits to wedding gowns is simply more challenging for the plus size woman. But there are those few items that simply seem to be tailor made for the plus size world -- take, for instance, the sweater.

When we think about sweaters, images of great Irish knits, geometric argyles, cardigans, turtlenecks and comfortable old pullovers run through our minds. Indeed, the history of the sweater goes back over a thousand years. First introduced by Irish fishermen seeking a way to stay dry and warm during their long trips to sea, the sweater shares a vibrant place in the modern-day wardrobe, both for work and for play.

Definitely one the most useful of all sweaters to the modern day woman is the cardigan. By definition, a cardigan is a sweater that opens in the front and can be closed with ties, buttons or clasps at the waist. It can be worn with a matching sleeveless or short sleeve pullover underneath, and can be dressed up or dressed down, depending on the occasion in question. Made from as many materials and in as many styles as one can imagine, the cardigan can be worn though every season. Indeed, a great tie cardigan can literally take you from 9am at your desk with a classic black skirt, to 9pm at the movies in a pair of jeans with friends.

For the plus size woman, a few great cardigan sweaters -- blends of comfort and elegance -- are a wardrobe must. Their style and versatility are a terrific coupling with a use-it-or-not slimming waist tie. A casual wool cable knit is a terrific warm touch on a cold winter night, and the figure flattering design of a silk cotton blend set is a perfect accent for the plus size woman's business attire. Want to add a little extra pizzazz? Try an off-the-shoulder sweater -- a sexy twist on the conservative classic. (Remember Jennifer Beals in Flashdance?) Or dress it up with a fabulous patent leather belt around the waist or a big red velvet ribbon for the holidays! And no wardrobe is complete without at least one great sweater dress for those blustery January days!

The bottom line is that sweaters aren't just that old pullover your grandmother made you in high school, or the useful old standby hanging on the back of your door for chilly nights. They are a terrific style piece for every wardrobe and add a warm layer of texture and charm any day of the week.
